Dear Parents, Students, and Community,

Knobbe Qualifies for two National Science Fair Competitions

AC/GC junior, Kiersten Knobbe, has qualified for two separate national science fair competitions. She placed second at the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) competition with her presentation “Turbid or Not Turbid: That is the Question: Creating a Water Filtration and Sanitation Method for Developing Countries.” As a result, Kiersten earned an all-expenses paid trip to present at the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium in Albuquerque, NM, April 20-23, 2022. Kiersten also competed at the Western Iowa Science and Engineering Fair (WISEF) where she was selected as a Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair 2022 FInalist. In addition to a $250 Iowa Central Community College scholarship, Kiersten also won a trip to compete at the International Science and Engineering Fair in Atlanta, GA.  

Kelsey Carlson, Haley Cose, and Justin Reinhart also competed at the WISEF. Carlson presented “What Food Helps a Venus Flytrap Grow?” in the Plant Science category and earned the United States Air Force Certificate of Achievement and Certificate of Award from the American Psychological Association for achievement in research in psychological science. Cose earned a $250 scholarship to Iowa Central Community College, the Exceptional Genius Olympiad award (a competition normally held in New York but will be held virtually this year), the United States Air Force Certificate of Achievement, and Student Award of Geoscience Excellence for her project, “Dinosaur Vocalization: Recreating Parasaurolophus Resonation Chambers.” Finally, Rinehart’s project “Social Media Pandemic: Analyzing the Impact of Social Media on Brain Waves” earned a $250 scholarship to Iowa Central Community College, a Certificate of Award from the American Psychological Association for achievement in research in psychological science, Western Iowa Science and Engineering Fair in Behavioral and Social Science Category, and a $250 scholarship to Iowa Central Community College. Congratulations to all of our scientists!

Legislative Coffee

Representative Ray “Bubba” Sorensen will be hosting a legislative coffee at 8 AM on Saturday, April 2, at the Guthrie Center Farm Bureau Building, 203 N. 4th Street, Guthrie Center, IA. Former Representative Walt Rogers will give a short presentation on Education Savings Accounts (ESA). Please attend, if you are able, to ask questions regarding the impact ESA’s would have on public education and other issues.
